Show the below picture of Tyrrells School. Has the school always been here? What do you think the land was used for before then? Collect ideas. Funnel thinking to rural use of land such as farming etc.
Show children the old maps of Springfield in the documents below and link with photographs of rural activity and landscape at that time. Discuss the links between the photographs and the map. Begin to understand land use changes over time. Ask and answer questions about the past.
Now, complete the worksheet below comparing the land now and then. What can you see in one map that there is less of in the other? Why might this be? What is the same about the maps? Use your discussions to compare the maps in full sentences.
