Chelmsford Junior Chess Tournament (Friday 1st July)
Friday saw the long-anticipated return of 'over-the-board' competitive chess. Tyrrells were invited to Moulsham Junior school who played host to 7 Primary teams which included Moulsham, Lawford Mead, Bishops, Springfield and St John's Danbury.
This was to be the first tournament experience for the team of Izzie (6L), Harveer (6O), Arjun (5V), Ria (5D), Summer (5D) and Spandan (4Wh) as well as a first time playing with clocks. Games were set at 20 minutes on the clock (40 minutes in total available) and 5 rounds were completed in the time allowed. Despite all these new experiences, in addition to playing a significantly longer format, the Tyrrells Team performed outstandingly achieving a total of 15.5 points and coming 2nd overall pipping Moulsham A by having a superior outcome against the winners (Bishops). A simply incredible achievement for their debut!
Despite the very long afternoon, everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves and all games were played in such a high degree of sportsmanship and enthusiasm - it was joy to behold!
We all very much look forward to further fixtures and tournaments next year when St Cedd’s and St Anne's will also join the mix to make the competition even stiffer! Well done to all involved - you did yourselves and the school proud!
