Helping at FoT Events

Why should I help?

FoT events raise money for the school and is used to support things like trips and class experiences and we also save up for bigger things like the playground equipment. When we run events it’s important to have enough people to keep things running smoothly and the kids safe. We really can’t do it without you! More volunteers means we can do more activities and raise more money for the school. It’s a great way to get to know other parents and kids at the school – and it’s fun!

What if I’ve never helped before?

Don’t worry if you haven’t done something like this before, we’d still love it if you’d come along. You’ll get full instructions on what to do and you can be paired up with a more experienced helper.

What will I be asked to do?

Helpers do all sorts of things like checking kids into events, running the tuck shop, setting up and running stalls, making sure kids stay in the event area and clearing up afterwards. We will only give you a job to do that you are comfortable with.

How can I volunteer to help?

You can volunteer to help when booking tickets for events (there will be a box to tick when you go through the booking process) or email friendsoftyrrells@live.co.uk at any time. We have a whatsapp group that we can add you to if you’d like to hear more about events you can help with.

Do I have to help for the whole event?
No, please just let the committee know what times you can do so we can make sure we have enough overall coverage. Any help is appreciated even if it is just an hour or two.

Can I bring my kids with me when I help?
This will depend on the event and the age and needs of your particular child. Please only bring children to events suitable for their age and ensure that younger children are properly supervised. We will try to put multiple helpers on each activity so they can get a break, however, helpers will be busy during events. If in any doubt please arrange for someone else to watch your child at the event or don’t volunteer!

Do I need a DBS check?
If you will be supervising the children without their parents / carers present (such as at a disco or movie night) then you do need to have a DBS check. This must be carried out by Tyrrells school, (please contact the school office for information regarding the application process), previous DBS checks from other organisations are unfortunately not valid for FoT events.

If you are helping at a large event when children will be with their parents / carers (such as the Christmas or summer events) then DBS checks are not needed for helpers. If you are not sure if you are allowed to help at an event please just ask!

What if I need to cancel or I have a problem at an FoT event?
Please tell a committee member or email friendsoftyrrells@live.co.uk as soon as possible. If there is any reason you can’t contact FoT directly then please contact the school and they will pass on the message.

I’d like to do more – can I join the FoT committee?
Yes, you can - new members are always welcome! The committee meet regularly (sometimes in person, sometimes online) to help plan FoT events and discuss with the school about what we use funds for. You can join mini-groups to help plan the bigger events and vote on committee decisions. If you would like to get more involved just contact us to find out more. You are welcome to come along to 1 or 2 meetings to watch before deciding if it’s for you.
