History off the Page - Great Fire of London Day
Year Two enjoyed a fabulous day learning all about the events of the Great Fire of London in 1666. They also explored what houses were like at the time, and the kinds of jobs people used to do. They were given the opportunity to be a barber surgeon (doctor), a tailor, a leather worker (tanner), a scrivener (writer), a chemist, a weaver, a perfumer and a chandler (candle maker) and they experienced a clear insight into what daily life would have been like in London at the time of the Great Fire.
The children also did some digging and excavating in order to look at some 'evidence' found after the fire and, using their findings and experience from the morning, they identified the jobs that the people who lived in the house would have done. They looked at old maps of London and letters to then find out where they were living when the fire occurred.
We had a wonderful day with Mistress Abby from History off the Page, and would like to thank her and all of the parent helpers for making the day such a huge success. A massive thank you also to FOT as we were able to heavily reduce the charge made to parents for this experience using our 'Hooks and Highlights' budget.
