Trips & Visits

Barleylands - March 2026

On Tuesday 10th of March, Year 1 headed off to Barleylands as part of their learning about farms. We all had a fantastic day and got to experience may different things.

We got to complete some cooking, making a rainbow fruit and vegetable salad. Here we could practise our cutting skills and think about all of the different types of fruit and vegetables that match the colour of the rainbow.

We arrived just in time as we got to see lambs and goats that had been born over the weekend and were still under heat lamps to keep them warm and help them grow. As well as this, we could feed some of the animals and pet them. The staff at Barleylands made sure we did this safely.

Not only did we do all of this, but we got to watch a birds of prey display, explore the polytunnels (where Barleylands grow their own herbs, fruit and vegetables) and go on a tractor ride!

The behaviour of the children was excellent from start to finish and we had such a great day!

Once again, thank you to the Friends of Tyrrells and all of the parents who supported Year 1 in being able to go on such a fun and educational trip!

Oaklands Museum - October 2025

Year 1 had the opportunity to visit Chelmsford Museum (Oaklands House) on the 8th of October. We had a fantastic day exploring the museum on a hunt for different Victorian home artefacts and participated in a Victorian toy workshop. We got to enter a Victorian kitchen a find out all about how it worked - there were no fridges or washing machines, so we got to see how daily chores would take place (we even had a go on a mangle!). Year 1 learnt all about the Wells family who lined in Oaklands House and was able to compare how their life is different to ours today. Overall, the day was lots of fun and we got to participate in lots of hands-on history that we have since used in class.
