Aspire, Care, Learn for Life

Tyrrells Chess Club (TCC)

Welcome to the homepage of the Tyrrells Chess Club (TCC)

Not many great things came out of lockdown however this is not true of chess. With the exposure given by the Queen's Gambit on Netflix and the evolution of online chess content, these are exciting times for chess players or learners.

TCC caters for all experience levels and is currenty operating for Years 4-6 with plans to open to Year 3 during the year and maybe even wider at some point! Children who join have account created in Chesskid.com and Lichess for online learning, tournament play and coaching.

At present, TCC takes place on a Monday after school (4-5pm) online. I operate 3 groups on a rotational basis with one group receiving coaching while the other 2 engage in a range of intra-club tournaments watched over by Miss O'Hanlon.

During coaching sessions, children will learn (depending on experience levels) basic principles, check mate patterns, puzzle-solving, opening theory and tactics suchas pins, forks and skewers. In additon, many game opportunities are provided to hone and practise their skills.

For those who wish to take their chess journey further, the TCC Chess Team currently competes in the National Primary & Prep School Blitz Battles on Fridays evenings. We are also about to enter into the 'She Plays To Win' online tournament which is an intiative to promote girl's chess (more details to follow) and I hope to provide some over-the-board tournaments against other local schools or clubs (pandemic situation permitting).

All details of forthcoming sessions, Microsoft Teams links, Tournament links are to be found on the Lichess TCC News area which is shown to all new members so please check in regularly. I will also place details of all forthcoming events on this web page.

I hope to see more members joining and loving learning to play the game!

TCC News/Updates

As we enter the second half of the Autumn term, I am sending this update out for your information.

Groupings

As you will notice from the latest Teams invites, I have now condensed the groups to two. This will ensure that all members receive coaching more regularly. Please make sure all members check the LIchess News Page regularly for the information on groupings, coaching sessions and the corresponding tournament and Teams links.

Other Club Conflicts

Given the recent return of external clubs, several children have expressed concerns at wanting to engage in both the TCC and an external club. This I have been happy to accommodate as I firmly believe that all children should engage in many opportunities. However, this has impacted on the chess coaching given. As a solution to this problem, I am going to run short coaching sessions on a Tuesday lunchtime for any child who wishes to continue their chess learning. This should release the pressure on a Monday to attend two clubs simultaneously. In addition, these children will also still be able to attend any/all of the tournaments put on (please keep a regular check on the Lichess news page and school website for this information and links). I have already met with all the members concerned and they seemed happy with this offer.

Puzzles

Puzzles are a fantastic way for learning to spot patterns and common situations and learn the appropriate moves/ways to attack or defend. It is often recommended by the top Grandmasters as one of the most important and powerful learning tools.

Therefore, every fortnight, I will be checking the Puzzle leader board for Puzzles completed on Lichess. The top three will receive house point rewards:

1st = 15;                 2nd = 10;                3rd = 5

Tournaments

The TCC will continue to compete in the National Primary and Prep school Online Tournament and the She plays to win initiative (next fixture in December). I am also hoping to put on an over-the-board fixture against another school in the near future but will have to wait until the Covid 19 guidance allows for it to happen in a safe and sensible way. More information will follow.

For the players who fancy a stiff challenge, please check the school website for information on the forthcoming return of the British Junior Championships hosted this year in Milton Keynes. Should anyone decide to go, please let me know and send any details of matches and the event to me to post on the websites.

Many thanks for your ongoing support
